One possible reason Dean looked so good and then fell so hard in Iowa and New Hampshire:Given the relentless hammering he took from the media, Dean was lucky to get 26% of the New Hampshire vote. Even so, Dean may be done for. Or, more to the point, do... [Read More]

To sum it up into a single phrase: "If you can't beat them, join em`"
I'd say $35M gone casts a new and favorable light on the decision to get rid of Trippi. I don't know if Neel is the guy to replace him or not but it seems clear that something was broken and needed to be fixed.
Trippi has problems with managing people on the ground, and this guy is supposed to be better.
I hope so.
That being said, when one is a lobbyist, one is a paid advocate.
The concerns are legitimate. They will be answered by listening to Neel, who will keep his mouth shut about this, but by Dean.
If Dean starts backpedaling on his pro regulation policies, then it's time for concern.
I feel my man Dean slipping away from me.
Replacing Trippi is overdue. Replacing him with Neel is ? I think I'd rather Dean try James Carvel...
If Dean slides back to the Corporate Right on regulation, I'll be very sad indeed.
I'm afraid that we are being driven to a choice between the Corporate Right, and Corp. Right Lite. If that's the choice we offer the American people in November, I'm afraid we won't get out from under Corporate rule for at least a generation or two. If Bush wins in November, it'll be one hell of a sad day.
Don't know if you've seen it, Professor, but Roy defends himself here.
There's nothing wrong with hiring a hired gun, so long as he's pointed at somebody else.
After all, Dean hired him as a campaign manager, not head of the FCC.
Anyone else notice Trippi owns the firm buying the media for dean?
First off, i am not a Dem. That being said, I think Trippi did some amazing things organizationally (sandwich w/ Howard fundraising, meet-ups and the unused cell minutes) which will change how campaigns may be run in the future.
But am I the only person who sees a conflict of interest w/ Trippi owning the media buying firm for the campaign (mentioned on Scripting.com and I think MSNBC)? I know he didnt take a salary, but... hes the guy who is authorizing the ad spending.
If a republican did this...
Be careful about that $35 million.
The $40 million you hear bandied about is a gross total of fundraising. It isn't money in the bank on Primary Day One- the money has been spent all along, since day one, on funding staff, equipment, materials and publicity.
The money Dean spent was used to bring him from a Kucinich-type unknown to a top-shelf candidate. His campaign remains solvent and continues to raise money. Note, also, that the campaigns of Gephardt and Lieberman raised on the order of $15 million each. Gephardt folded after the first battle. Lieberman just did. Now that's something to wonder about...
