A little tangential but ... It's more than just "said" that such verses exist.

The similar verse in Guthrie's handwritten composition, dated Feb. 23, 1940, and printed in Joe Klein's biography of Guthrie, is:


Was a big high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said: Private Property
But on the back side it didn't say nothing -
This land was made for you and me.


And Guthrie sings the verse in one of the versions he recorded for Moe Asch.
