help?

Over the years, I've sometimes come to this place to ask for tech help. I'm here again. I've had some fantastic support from wildly overworked sorts -- M. David most recently and most extensively. But I'm now in some desperate need for someone or some few who could commit some cycles to lessig.org development. I'm keen to clean up the mess that is the content on my site -- making my presentations more easily available, providing free format versions of everything I can, etc. That means the right sort would have experience with codecs and some design, and a taste for building systems that scale easily.

I can put together a small budget to support some of this, but not a ton. If you can help, drop a note here with your experience and a clear indication of the level of support you could offer.

Damn Larry, You are one cheap bastard... Why don't you pay market for this stuff like everyone else. Looking at your Flickr photos you can surely afford it. If you can hang out with Richard Branson on his private game reserve in South Africa for two weeks, you can surely afford to pay someone more than a "small budget" to update your website.

Stop this pauper routine. It's getting old.

@Jain Berlor,

With all due respect, WTF?

On more than several levels, I find your comments offensive.

Firstly, at a personal level: I charge my clients upwards of $325/hr, more if it requires extensive travel. I've been volunteering my time to Professor Lessig now for the last couple of years for several reasons, but at the top of that list is the fact that I have gained more from Professor Lessigs' work than could ever be returned in the form of a paycheck.

Secondly, how much have you gained from his tireless and in many ways, thankless work? With all due respect, have some God damn respect, you arrogant prick.

Thirdly, Professor Lessig is not a rich man. Wait, scratch that: He is a rich man: He has a family that loves him, a community that appreciates and supports him for who he is and what he does, and a University that supports him financially. Bill Gates he is not, at least from a financial perspective. Bill Gates he is -- or better said -- a loving, compassionate, cares more about the positive effect his work has on man kind more so than what his pocket book alone could have on mankind is what Lawrence Lessig -- the man -- is all about.

From what I can gather, you have no clue what I am referring to.

And don't ever undervalue my or anybody else's work -- especially Professors Lessig's work -- again. Believe it or not, there are more important things on this planet to may of us who care about more things than ourselves, something you quite obviously have no fucking clue about. So do me a favor. Shut the fuck up.

Calculatedly offensive, and 0 Google hits for "Jain Berlor". Very trollish.

Mr. Lessig, Im a young law student from Chile and I've been reading your book "Free Culture" (the translated version). Certainly, one of the greatest books that I ever read. Very useful for my practical knowledge, and an excelent tool for my future job as a lawyer.

I'm very thankful for your contribution, and I'll read "The Future of Ideas".

If you're on a small budget I'd avoid "building systems that can scale" and keep things as simple as possible. Keep in mind that even if you got someone to set up some great system, the biggest cost is maintenance, and you could be in trouble if that person decides to move on...

Don't know if there are issues with using Movable Type -- but I'd stick to using one or the other existing blogging systems. If YouTube isn't "free" enough, maybe check if you can upload to Archive.org instead. Etc.

Regarding the design of the current site: It may not be great, but it's not actively bad -- so who cares (we're here for the content, after all)!

I'd put all your media files on S3 and just use wordpress to make access to the database scalable...

S3's really fast, and it's cheap.

I liked the way of your writing, seems good knowledge. Keep writing will be back soon because i like mostly horoscope, romance, dating, jokes, recipe and i found something new here soo... you know

Why don't you use LJ, Sir?
You are, after all, on the Advisory Board there, yes?
I'm sure you wouldn't mind a few ads scattered through your layout.

That’s probably an interesting point concerning this subject. Such information should be accessible to the wider public. http://www.truckersservices.com

By entering the words in the box, you are also helping to digitize texts that were written before the computer age. The words that you see were taken directly from old texts that are being scanned and stored by the Internet Archive. This CAPTCHA helps proofread the books. If the sample is too hard to read, click the recycle button to get another two. A space between each word is required. And thanks for the comment and help.
