Happy Birthday to GNU

fry720.jpg

British humorist Stephen Fry has produced a video to mark the 25th Anniversary of RMS's launch of the GNU operating system. Watch and celebrate here.

This is an extraordinary milestone to mark. I'll keep a list of celebratory videos here (email me with any links). Congratulations to Richard on the success of this movement launched as an idea 25 years ago (September 27 is the date), and more importantly, thank you to Richard for this movement launched as an idea 25 years ago.

Hi Lawrence,

I was wondering whether you could provide any comment on the latest Google "Chrome" browser. Most aparently under Clause 11:

"11. Content license from you

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

11.2 You agree that this license includes a right for Google to make such Content available to other companies, organizations or individuals with whom Google has relationships for the provision of syndicated services, and to use such Content in connection with the provision of those services."

Given this clause, it makes me wonder why ANYONE would want to use this browser?

Love to hear your thoughts?

Cheers,

T.

It's extraordinary how far we've come in 25 years since rms's kick-start. But almost as extraordinary is how far we have left to go.

Although Tim Davis' comment above is clearly off topic w.r.to GNU's 25-year birthday, it seems to highlight an extremely important issue of the moment. Google's new browser appears to be gaining *massive* mindshare in a mere handful of hours (at least in my social circles), so if there is a problem here it might be worth examining quickly and nipping in the bud. And if there isn't a problem then we can all breath a sigh of relief.

Perhaps we could discuss this somewhere more appropriate, but in detail?

Yeah, Happy 25th GNU!! Long live freedom!

P.S. The Google Chrome TOS has since been updated

Later wishes to 25th birthday of GNU. Cheers.....

By entering the words in the box, you are also helping to digitize texts that were written before the computer age. The words that you see were taken directly from old texts that are being scanned and stored by the Internet Archive. This CAPTCHA helps proofread the books. If the sample is too hard to read, click the recycle button to get another two. A space between each word is required. And thanks for the comment and help.
